What is PCS – System for product compliance?

PCS (Product Compliance System) The Product Compliance System (PCS) is a new product that has been developed out of the need to ensure compliance for product safety, PSCR 2016 (see separate product page). Attention to (preventive) product safety requires systematic work that covers several levels and functions in a company.

Due to this, PCS  has been developed with the purpose of assuring a system for preventive actions integrated with other systems in the company in a three-layer structure with operative, systemic and governance control.

Milestones in PCS

Milestones, cornerstones or foundations; There are seven parts of PCS that are consistent for the application of the approach. By understanding the basics (Chapter 2), the Parts of the System (3) and Guiding Questions (4), a preventive system for compliance with laws and regulations may be achieved, where the following seven parts are central.

1.

Culture; How is corporate culture reflected through mindsets, values, code of conduct, etc., and how does this affect compliance (and product safety)?

2.

Objectives; The overall goal of PCS is to orient the company in such a way that binding commitments can be met throughout the product life cycle of products that have been manufactured or placed on the market?

3.

Risks; Product compliance risks need to be systematically and regularly analysed throughout the product life cycle, taking into account product compliance objectives, product range and business model.

4.

Program; A PCS program refers to all activities and processes in the company that aim to generate, maintain, and subsequently monitor product compliance. These activities should be specified and then integrated into new or existing processes?

5.

Organization; A so called 3-level approach or an organization in three levels is a prerequisite for operative implementation and responsibility of product integrity (PSCR).

6.

Communication and training; Awareness and education are necessary for effective product compliance enforcement. Communication concepts and a training plan should be developed taking into account aspects related to corporate culture.

7.

Monitoring, improvements, reporting; In practice, within the framework of the socalled obligation to monitor laws and regulations, a system for the management of compliance with law (as an umbrella term) should be introduced.

Why?

Implementation of a PCS means that a (stable) basis for ensuring compliance and compliance is put in place. The methodology (publication) contains three parts:

  • Base: What does PCS mean?
  • System parts and levels: How should it be built up?
  • Guidance: How will it be used?

Advantages with a PCS

  • Ensuring the practical application of PSCR (customer requirements from several vehicle manufacturers).
  • Reduced risks of costs related to product safety
  • Can be integrated with existing systems for e.g. environmental management.
  • Enables better communication and decisionmaking with clear audit reports

For which people?

PCS is a good knowledge to support and apply PSCR and is particularly useful for people who work with product realization (including process development), purchasing or quality. Examples of roles that should have knowledge of PCS (in the supply chain):

  • Quality management
  • Prodyuct development
  • Quality auditing
  • Corporate management
  • Finance/legal

Since culture and values play a central role in PCS, the company management is a particularly important recipient of knowledge about PCS.

Development and training in PCS

To further develop competence in PCS, we provide following:

Since culture and values play a central role in PCS, the company management is a particularly important recipient of knowledge about PCS.

  • PCS-training; The training plan is being developed and we expect to be able to offer open and internal training starting in quarter 3, 2025.
  • Consulting support; Based on analyses that you have made of your processes, we can recommend the application of PCS.
  • PCS audit;  Based on the socalled ThreeLine Model“, we can revise/analyze your processes with a focus on PCS/PSCR and make suggestions for improvement. In a normal sized company, a PCS audit takes a day.

As the only official VDA QMC partner in the Nordics, we deliver PCS training based on the original VDA QMC program (ID 534), including the seven building blocks of an effective Product Compliance System. This ensures your team receives training aligned with internationally recognized standards used across the automotive industry.

Frequently asked questions about PCS

PCS is a systematic approach to ensuring legal compliance and product safety.

Knowledge of PCS can be useful in all industries where there are legal or other regulatory requirements for the product.

The PCS training lasts one (1) day and includes a large number of exercises of a practical nature with reference to two fictitious companies.

There is a single volume of the PCS of 50 pages (A5) which provides a basic description of the content of the PCS.
