GENERAL
Degree of maturity for new products (securing of) is a method for evaluating risks in development projects. The first edition was published in Germany in 2009 and 2018 a new version and revision of the content was launched.
The method is based on a traffic light system for evaluating conditions in seven parts (degrees of maturity, ML) as follows:
maturity | Meaning | ML 0 | Innovation release for complete production development |
---|---|
ML 1 | Handling of requirements for issuing contracts |
ML 2 |
Determine the supply chain and issue orders |
ML 3 | Release of technical specifications |
ML 4 | Completion of production planning |
ML 5 | Articles from production tools and production premises are available |
ML 6 | Process / authorization |
ML 7 | Project completion, transfer of responsibility to production. Start of recalculation. |
Assuring the degree of maturity is a control method within project management that is initiated by OEM or by a customer. By applying specified rules, such as “round table” calls, where the supplier of products and the customer’s internal organization work together at an early stage of the process for product realization. Unnecessary extra work can be avoided when the elements in ensuring maturity are constantly consciously integrated at an early stage in the project management.
By applying a structured process that links the status of defined evaluation conditions to associated maturity, which in turn is oriented towards milestones in an overall project plan, determined by the vehicle manufacturer, the agreed quality for the product to be delivered is ensured.
