8D - Problem Solving in 8 Disciplines

Requirements for a documented process in IATF 16949

A documented process for structured problem solving is one of the requirements of IATF 16949:2016. This is required, among other things, because a modern vehicle on the road contains many components, and since several of them have or may have safety-affecting functions, all suppliers of such components must also come up with basic causes and quick problem solving in the event of failures, e.g. customer complaints, field faults and internal deviations

8D is a method for structured problem solving that has been found to consist of eight (partly overlapping) steps: These are:

  • D1 – Problem Solving Team
  • D2 – Problem Statement
  • D3 — Containment measures
  • D4 – Root cause analysis
  • D5 – Selection and verification of corrective actions
  • D6 – Introduction and validation of corrective actions
  • D7 – Prevention of recurrence
  • D8 – Conclusion and confirmation of the group’s success

The VDA QMC Volume (80 pages) was updated 2020 and is available in our webshop.

In 8D, the different steps shall be applied in such a way that unlikely causes are excluded and only probable causes are those that persist and will be addressed, thus leading to effective corrective and preventive measures.

The benefits of applying 8D Because the right problem is that resources for problem solving can be allocated correctly and that simple actions are taken for simple problems and that more complex problems are “given” the right resources.

The people who benefit from knowing 8D are the persons who are in any way involved in customer service and/or technical problem solving. In the first place, these include:

  • Project management
  • Product
  • Purchase
  • Process development
  • Quality control
  • (Management)

Depending on your role in the company, you should have knowledge of implementation or understanding of what the 8D report should look like and what underlying “tools” (e.g. Are  /Are Not, or Ishikawa) that have been used.

Further development/Competence development in 8D This can be done in three ways:

  • Participation in training in 8D (1-2 days)
  • Use of consultancy support and development of management systems for problem solving.
  • Evaluation of existing problem-solving methods using the assessment template available in 8D Method.

We train you in the 8D method either as internal company training or in open training (see course syllabus below or on a separate page). Training for people with good experience with 8D  In 1 day, a 2-day training that is more basic and thorough. See our course syllabus and feel free to contact us for discussion about course syllabus, course content or consultancy support.

Problem solving with 8D can be documented with standard tools (e.g. MS Excel), but then a well-developed template is required that makes it possible to later see, for example, which root cause analyses were carried out and how well the problem-solving group succeeded. VDA QMC has developed a JAVA-based tool that contains all steps and evaluation conditions. The program is available in German and English versions, but we are working (January 2024) on getting a Swedish language version as well.
